Troubleshooting Your Power Wheelchair or Scooter

troubleshooting your scooter, Phoenix, ArizonaIf your power wheelchair or mobility scooter is acting up or just won’t start, you need to remedy the problem quickly. Although you might be tempted to call the repairman right away, many common power chair problems have simple solutions.

You can do some easy troubleshooting yourself. If your power scooter won’t start:

  • Make sure the batteries are charged.
  • If your scooter is fully charged, check the key. Is it missing or improperly inserted? Make sure it’s correctly inserted and turned to the “on” setting.
  • Check the manual free-wheel switch, and make sure it’s off. When it’s on, the switch allows the scooter to be pushed manually. You don’t need to use the switch if you’re moving on your own.
  • Check to see if the power-saver mode is on. Remove the key and wait for at least 30 seconds. Then try to start again. Power-save is a safety setting that keeps the battery from starting the power chair when it’s stationary with the key in the ignition.
  • Check the circuit breaker. Reset it if necessary. If the breaker trips again, try charging your batteries more often. Have your battery load tested at your service center to see if it needs to be replaced.

Collapsible scooters can have additional reasons for not starting, besides those already listed:

  • Make sure the batteries are securely seated and connected properly. For clip batteries, make sure they’re attached to their respective terminals.
  • Check for a loose harness. The harness joining the back and front sections of the scooter may need to be reconnected.
  • Remember…It’s always best to maintain your scooter or powerchair rather then wait until repairs are needed.
