Getting Active After You’ve Had A Spinal Cord Injury: 4 Tips

Becoming active has many benefits, including weight management and improved self-image. Physical activity also helps to minimize your risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and depression. Here are four tips for getting active.

Consult your health-care provider

Work with your doctor and physical therapist to determine the kinds of activities that will make you stronger — physically, mentally and spiritually. Although you may not be able to participate fully at first, map a plan that will help you achieve your end goal and road marks along the way.

Start gradually

Your doctor or physical therapist will most likely advise you to start gradually. Follow that advice. Instead of doing an activity every day, do it every other day. Keep it short and simple at first, and then work up to a regimen that takes longer and requires more strength — as your health-care provider recommends. The goal is to have a regular routine.

Get creative

A spinal cord injury can prevent you from doing some of the things the way you used to do them. But you can still enjoy many of those activities, with modifications. As we saw at the Paralympic Games in London, almost any form of athletic activity is possible with the right training and adaptive equipment. Options that many wheelchair athletes consider are racing and basketball. If possible, consult with a certified therapeutic recreational specialist, who can help you choose an activity and develop your skills in it.

Do not limit yourself

It is important for your health to remain active. Although it’s easy to become demoralized from time to time, staying active can help you counteract those low feelings. Exercise can help you de-stress, reaching each milestone can lift your spirits, and being around other people who are doing the same thing can help you feel less isolated.
