A spinal cord injury refers to any type of damage to the nerves located at the end of the spinal canal or the spinal cord itself. Oftentimes, when you suffer from this type of injury, it seems as though your entire life is affected. However, there are effective methods out there that will help you to manage the pain and enhance your quality of life.
- Medications: Medications are one of the most common forms of pain relief prescribed to a patient who suffers from discomfort associated with a spinal cord injury. The anticonvulsant medication Lyrica was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as an effective method of alleviating discomfort as a result of spinal issues. Other options include opiates, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) and muscle relaxants.
- Acupuncture: Although eating a healthy diet consisting of various vitamins such as calcium and zinc is an essential aspect of a natural approach to combating the risks related to spinal problems, this method doesn’t do much to combat the pain. Acupuncture, however, is a natural approach to medicine that utilizes tiny needles being strategically inserted into the back to remedy the pain.
- Exercise: Through physical therapy and various stretching exercises, a person can reduce the amount of pain being experienced. Exercise aids in maintaining an ideal body weight and releases endorphins in the brains, which can improve mood and decrease pain.
- Meditation: Meditation is a holistic approach to medicine that redirects negative thoughts from focusing on the pain to more positive thoughts that don’t center on the discomfort.
