As much as you look forward to reaching your destination, having a mobility issue can take some of the pleasure out of traveling. Navigating airports can be a hassle, and going through screening can seem overwhelming. For that reason, the Transportation Security Administration has established a help line, TSA Cares, for travelers with disabilities and medical conditions. The help line is designed to answer all of your questions about airport screening.
How TSA Cares works
Call TSA Cares’ toll-free number, 1-855-787-2227, with your questions about what to expect at the security checkpoint. The line’s hours are 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. EST Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekends and holidays. A staff member will provide information pertinent to your condition. If the staff member can’t answer your specific questions, you will be referred to a TSA disability expert.
TSA Cares advises calling four days in advance of your trip so that a customer service manager can offer help if you need it during the screening. Your wheelchair, scooter, walker or other mobility device will be allowed through the security check once it has been screened.
Screening for wheelchair, scooter, cane and walker users
If you have trouble standing, you can be screened in your wheelchair or scooter, but you’ll need to tell a TSA agent. It’s likely that your screening will involve a pat-down. If you can stand and walk a short way, you will probably be screened the same way other passengers are screened.
Your wheelchair or scooter, including the seat, the pouches and the fanny packs will be inspected and tested for traces of explosives. Removable pouches will be X-rayed. If you use a cane or walker, it will be X-rayed. If it cannot fit in the X-ray machine, it will be inspected by a security officer. For more information, go to the TSA Cares web page.
